Dining Out: Lunch at South St Burger

When is comes to the burger Olympics competition, Team Canada has Licks , Hero and longtime vet Harveys on its team while strong Team US players include In-n-Out and Carl's Jr.

On Friday, Gary and I stopped for lunch at the rookie on the Canadian team. Its called South St. Burger . IMHO this kid is already a contender for the gold medal. South St Burger is the creation of the same franchising outfit behind New York Fries (which South St Burger also serves). Gary & I stopped in at their Leaside location at Laird and Wicksteed (south of Eglinton, in the same SmartCentre anchored by Home Depot, Sobeys and Best Buy) for a late lunch (@ around 2:30 PM). I understand the location has been open for about 2 years now.

The restaurant wasn't very busy at the time ( two cops on bikes were the other customers) and we were able to enjoy our burgers in the open air at a table on their small patio out back. The restaurant decor was nothing fancy but we were very impressed with both the quality of the food and its value. They provide a choice of either a white or whole wheat bun and three types of cheese. The standard 1/3rd lb burger is freshly broiled while you wait. The condiments bar is also very well stocked and (like at Harveys and Licks) the bun is dressed to your personalized command in front of your eyes. We found the burgers very tasty and juicy and a good size for the money. We will definitely make a return trip. The sole disappointment was that the soda fountain featured Pepsi products so we were unable to enjoy our preferred Diet Coke with our fast food (tho the menu also boasted fresh ice cream shakes).

I highly recommend this place. SSB have several other locations in the GTA (two north of the city and one in Mississauga).
