To celebrate the 10th anniversary of its American debut,,ABC has announced that the game show franchise "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" will return to network primetime TV this summer for a special two-week event as an hour length 8 PM strip. "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" will premiere SUNDAY, AUGUST 9 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET) and will air for 11 nights, Sunday-Thursday at 8:00 p.m., with the finale on SUNDAY, AUGUST 23 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET). The special flight of shows will be hosted by original MC Regis Philbin. Who Wants to Be a Millionaire first debuted in a similar two-week window on August 16, 1999. A hour hour daily syndicated version of the show, hosted by Meredith Vierra, has continued to air in most major US markets after ABC suspended the series’ prime time run. Interest in the show has piqued recently due to the success of the Indo-British motion picture “Slumdog Millionaire” which won the Best Picture Oscar price in February. Scenes from that movie are set on a Millionaire soundstage.
It is still unclear whether the phone-in qualification or fastest finger rounds will be reinstated, whether the "ask an expert" lifeline used in Super Millionaire or the new lifeline and time limit elements introduced in the daytime version of the show will be elements retained in the special suite of shows.
